Piazza Plebiscito
Piazza Plebiscito is the symbolic square of Naples, located at the end of via Toledo, in the historic city center. Its surface measures approximately 25,000 square meters, and it is widely used for major events and demonstrations. It is the result of work done on the irregular open space that it was centuries ago, and it was where Neapolitans gathered to celebrate, and this irregular shape remained for centuries: only from the 17th century onwards, following the construction of the Royal Palace by Domenico Fontana, did it begin to take on the shape we know now.
However, the real transformation came in the 19th century, when, following the decisions of the French, the churches of San Luigi di Palazzo and Santo Spirito were first demolished and replaced by the Exedra, which is now known worldwide as one of the symbols of the square.
But what does it owe its name to? To the plebiscite on October 21, 1860, which opted for the annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
A great desecration was the decision in the 1960s to transform it into a public car park: fortunately, in 1994, it was pedestrianized again and returned to tourists and Neapolitans in all its beauty.
The most important monuments surrounding the square are Palazzo di Salerno, the Royal Palace, Palazzo della Prefettura, and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola.
